The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge spans the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau between Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. It is named for the popular eight-term Southeast Missouri congressman who helped lead efforts to secure funding for its construction. Mr. Emerson died in June 1996 shortly before the contract to build the bridge was awarded. The bridge, completed in December 2003, is a 100-foot-wide, 4,000-foot-long cable stay bridge illuminated at night by 140 lights. The original structure it replaces was built in 1927.
